Introduction

In this session, Revelation chapter 5: 1-7, we focus on understanding the secret of the scroll and the One who was worthy to open it to take it from the One sitting on the throne and open it. Jesus is described as both the Lion and the Lamb. We are answering the question of being worthy in this session.

Objectives

By the end of this session, the learner will have:

  • Appreciated that the church in hostility will be summoned to heaven after witnessing roles here on earth by connecting the words in Rev 1:19 and Rev 4:1.
  • Understood the truth about worship of the ONLY worthy God by knowing who he is, knowing what he alone had done, and Knowing Why he did it.
  • Appreciated that worship is the only thing a believer can do after knowing the truth about Jesus, the redeemer.
  • Understood the main question ❓ on earth about worship and the Only true answer to that question ❓ of being WORTHY by listing who Jesus is and what He has done for Us.
  • Appreciated the revelation of the scroll by listing what it contained. (Scroll was the book of the redemption of the earth and those contained on earth).

Group Study Time

Revelation 5: 1-7.

Connecting

  • Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
  • Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
  • Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
  • Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.

Comprehending

  • Read Rev 5: 1. What is the scroll, or book, in the right hand of One who sat on the throne? Describe this scroll. What do you think it contained?
  • What is the meaning of the word worthy? What was the question ❓ of the strong angel? Revelation 5:2-4. (The answer to this question makes Christ the Only true redeemer and saviour of the world, and Christianity the ONLY True religion on Earth?)
  • Read Rev 5: 5. What was the answer to the question ❓ of being worthy and able to open the seals of the scroll? List 3 things revealed after the question was asked?
  • Read Rev 5: 5-7. Describe Jesus, who was WORTHY to open the seals of the book? What do the seven horns, and seven spirits represent?

Committing

  • Engage with the Bible—read, study, memorize, meditate, pray, listen, and live it out.
  • List three lessons you have learnt as an agent of change that you would like to put into practice and teach others about.
  • Take time and worship Jesus with the attributes revealed about Christ.

Revelation 5: 1-7.

Revelation 5:1-7

  • Context:
    • John’s heavenly vision continues post-rapture, focusing on the throne room, amidst heresies denying Jesus’ incarnation, using Luke 15 brothers for Jews/Gentiles.
    • Chapter 5 reveals Jesus’ worthiness to open the scroll, the title deed to creation, signaling redemption’s culmination.
  • The Sealed Scroll (Revelation 5:1-4):
    • God, on the throne, holds a scroll (creation’s title deed) sealed with seven seals, containing His redemptive plan (v. 1).
    • A strong angel asks who is worthy to open it; no one in heaven, earth, or under earth qualifies, causing John to weep (v. 2-4).
    • Mercy prepares for Jesus’ revelation as the worthy one.
  • Jesus, Lion and Lamb (Revelation 5:5-7):
    • An elder comforts John, declaring the Lion of Judah, Root of David, has overcome to open the scroll (v. 5).
    • Jesus appears as a slain Lamb with seven horns (authority) and seven eyes (Spirit’s omniscience), standing between the throne and creatures, taking the scroll from God’s hand (v. 6-7).
    • Mercy exalts Jesus’ sacrificial victory for creation’s redemption.
  • Application:
    • Trust Jesus, the slain Lamb and conquering Lion, worthy to redeem creation and restore all relationships (God, man, creation, self, Satan)—mercy assures His authority to fulfill God’s plan.
