John 6: 31-58

Introduction

This session, John 6: 32-58, focuses on the conversations (inputs and reflections) between Jesus the teacher and his disciples the learners. In this conversation, which followed the previous feeding of the 5000 men, Jesus tested their belief of him being the bread of life. The learners viewed Jesus just as a human being, the son of Joseph (John 6:42).

Objectives

By the end of this session the learner will have:

  • Appreciated that God always test, or assess believers and disciples.
  • Understood the perspective of students, crowds and disciples following Jesus by following at the conversations between Jesus and the followers.
  • Identified the only work God require of us, believing that Jesus is the bread of Life

Connecting

  • Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
  • Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
  • Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
  • Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.

Comprehending

  • Read John 6: 30-31. What did the crowds believe about the bread for the travellers? What was their view of Jesus? (John 6:42)
  • What is the one thing these traveller’s, or followers of Jesus, would believe about Jesus? John 6: 33-35, 41, 48, 51.
  • Read John 6: 35-44. What were the benefits of believing that Jesus is the bread of life to keep us on the stairway? List three things that hindered these travellers to believe Jesus is the bread of life?
  • Read John 6: 32-58, Using the talk about bread, list 4 claims Jesus said as being equal to God, so they could believe in him.

Committing

  • Engage with the Bible—read, study, memorize, meditate, pray, listen, and live it out.
  • List three lessons you have learnt as an agent of change that you would like to put into practice and teach others about.
  • Take time and worship Jesus with the attributes revealed about Christ.

  • Identify one person you can connect with and share the valuable insights and lessons you gained from this session.
  • Reach out to a new believer—either in person or by phone—and pray with them to support them through their challenges, including any concerns about attending church.
  • Create a new group and guide others through this study to help them grow in their understanding.
