The Teachings of the King: The Dangers of Unmanaged Resources

Matthew 6:1-17

Introduction

Jesus challenged the Kingdom’s citizens, warning that they would be affected by unmanaged financial resources.

Objectives

By the end of this session, you will have:

  • Understood how unmanaged financial resources, whether abundant or scarce, affect Kingdom living.
  • Appreciated that neither rich nor poor people are truly happy or contented; only Kingdom people are.

Outline

Jesus was the Expected Messiah as expressed through:

  • How unmanaged resources affect Kingdom living.
  • The wisdom of asking for neither too much money nor too little.
  • Dealing with worry biblically.

Connecting

  • Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
  • Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
  • Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
  • Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.

What do the verses mean?
(In small groups, attempt the following questions):

  • What did you learn about the attributes of God from this session? (We learn about God from what He says or does, His being, or what others say about Him.)
  • What are treasures? What is money? List at least three ways people acquire money. List the four ways people spend money on their possessions.
  • Read Matthew 6:24. What does this verse reveal about serving God and money? How can you serve money? How can money serve you?
  • Read Matthew 6:19-24. What did Jesus say about using your money and your vision for your money? (Laying up your treasures and the eye being the lamp of the body.)
  • What happens when you have less than enough money? What worries you concerning having little money?
  • Read Matthew 6:25-34. What five truths did Jesus teach His students about the enemy called worry or anxiety? How does worry affect Kingdom living?

Committing

  • Engage with the Bible—read, study, memorize, meditate, pray, listen, and live it out.
  • List three lessons you have learnt as an agent of change that you would like to put into practice and teach others about.
  • Take time and worship Jesus with the attributes revealed about Christ.
  • Use the SPACEPETS model, to assist you in putting God’s word into practice. Look for:

    • Error to change
    • Prayer to make
    • Example to copy
    • Truth to obey and

Communicating

  • Identify one person you can connect with and share the valuable insights and lessons you gained from this session.
  • Reach out to a new believer—either in person or by phone—and pray with them to support them through their challenges, including any concerns about attending church.
  • Create a new group and guide others through this study to help them grow in their understanding.
